Kathleen Caine is a dedicated bassoonist originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, now thriving as a freelance musician in Western Pennsylvania. Currently serving as the Principal Bassoonist for the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, she actively substitutes in various ensembles, showcasing her versatility and talent. With performances that include the Indiana University Pennsylvania Orchestra, Grove City College Orchestra, and the Johnstown Symphony, Kathleen has made a significant mark in the orchestral community. A finalist in the 2014 concerto competition at Westminster College, she also premiered her own composition that year. In 2022, Kathleen performed at the PMEA conference with the Keystone Chamber Winds and has been involved in numerous operas and musicals as principal bassoon since 2020. Along with her performance expertise, she possesses a deep understanding of music theory, history, composition, and arranging, which she shares by mentoring young musicians. Kathleen earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Performance from Westminster College and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively, under the guidance of esteemed teachers. Joining the Altoona Symphony staff in 2023, she transitioned to the role of Personnel Manager & Librarian in 2024, bringing her organizational skills and passion for music to the team. Outside of her musical endeavors, she cherishes time spent with her husband, Zach, and their lively toddler, as well as indulging in her love for reading and cooking from her favorite themed cookbooks.
